Other procedures such as thoracentesis may be performed to drain pleural effusions and prevent them from recurring. Other symptoms include hoarseness, coughing up blood, swelling of the face and arms, muscle weakness, and sensory loss.

Mesothelioma is not Always cause by Asbestos

Asbestos is the most common cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos is a natural mineral, mined from rock found in many countries. Up to nine out of ten cases of mesothelioma are caused by exposure to asbestos. It is made up of tiny fibres that are as strong as steel but can be woven like cotton and are highly resistant to heat and chemicals.

Mesothelioma - Not Always Asbestos

It’s no secret that things we take for granted every day are man made materials. Most of the time we never even give pause to think about what the objects we interact on a daily basis is made from. Most everything, with few exceptions, is made from chemicals. This is rarely a concern, until it is discovered that a certain chemical can cause medical problems. However, even natural substances can sometimes cause us our bodies harm.

Asbestos is one of the most useful earth materials. However, due to its poisonous content, several countries have banned the use of asbestos. Excessive exposure to this kind of material can cause lung diseases such as lung cancer or mesothelioma. The latter is the common disease caused by too much inhalation of asbestos fibers, powder, dust, or other forms that asbestos may have been breathed into the lungs.

Weight loss, chest pain, fever, fatigue, hoarseness, or coughs are some common symptoms different diseases. However, they are also the symptoms of this lung disease. When a person suffers from mesothelioma, fluid can surround the lungs. In some cases, the mesothelioma may even cause the lung to collapse. This list is by no means conclusive of symptoms associated with mesothelioma. It is highly advised that if you were exposed to asbestos for long periods of time and you think you may be at risk for it, that you talk to a doctor immediately.

Mesothelioma can be detected through medical tests such as an MRI, chest X-rays or CT scans. Cytology and biopsy can also detect the presence of abnormal cells and fluids in the lungs. If this disease is not immediately treated, the lungs will probably collapse.

Since asbestos causes this kind of serious disease, some countries such as New Zealand, Brazil, Australia, and the U.K banned this kind of material. Many people believe that the United States banned it. However, it never was. The Environmental Protection Agency spent millions researching and reporting on the dangers and risks associated with asbestos. Unfortunately, a Federal Court ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a ban. This is still a sore spot with the EPA to this day.

However, there are some cases wherein this disease is caused by any kind of fibrous silicates instead of asbestos, although the percentage is only minimal.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment Options

The mesothelioma does not always respond to cancer treatments. Doctors and researchers are working to improve mesothelioma treatment all the time. You may be offered treatment as part of a clinical trial and not as a standard treatment. The results of the trials will be used to improve treatment in the future.

Effective Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Most great cases of mesothelioma are either in pleural or peritoneal form. Mesothelioma is not such a forgiving disease. Many people that contract the disease have been known to live for only a year and not more.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is rare and quite different from the other type of mesothelioma, its said to affect the abdominal lining(peritoneum). Peritoneal mesothelioma take up only 30% of all the mesothelioma cases reported.

The disease takes such a long time to develop and with symptoms that are quite similar to many other less serious types of ailments. When a person is diagnosed their chances of surviving the disease are very small. The disease is said to be so lethal to the point that survival chances are limited to just a few months. But fortunately peritoneal mesothelioma is treatable and the treatment largely depends on the cancer stage, Age and overall health of the patient. But of course if detected in its early stages treatment can increase your survival chances ten fold.

Treatment options for peritoneal mesothelioma include:

Surgery> surgery is the most common form of treatment option for malignant types of mesothelioma. The Doctor removes part of the lining for the abdomen and some of the tissue around it. Surgery depends largely on the extent the cancer has spread in the body.

Below are 2 of the surgical procedures administered to peritoneal mesothelioma patients.

Pleurectomy: A surgery is conducted to remove the abdomen lining and and some of the tissue surrounding it. This procedure is performed for a variety of disorders including pleural effusion, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and trauma.

Pleurectomy/decortication: A surgery is conducted to remove a a part of the abdomen lining(peritoneal) and as much of the tumor mass as possible. This procedure can be performed to reduce pain caused by the tumor mass. This form of surgery can be generally aimed at relieving symptoms, such as recurrent ascites or bowel obstruction.

Chemotherapy: This type of treatment is administered to help kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy can be taken in the form of pills or through syringes. Chemotherapy is also known as systematic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells throughout the body.

Radiotherapy: This form of treatment is administered in the form of High-energy x-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, and other sources of radiation are used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Studies have shown that using only a single one of the treatments listed above have listed to fail to improve the conditions of the patients. Instead combining all of the above options has been known to improve the patents chances of surviving.

Mesothelioma Cancer and Surviving

It is a type of asbestos lung cancer that strikes victims with tumors likely to kill. The tumors are known to develop in the lungs and chest area. Patients that are found with mesothelioma cancer have breathed in asbestos from a workplace. They are legally able to file a lawsuit against the company to obtain payment for their treatment.

The cancer is rarely found in the United States, with less than 5000 victimized people. Generally, the older generation has been found to be the most affected.

Types of Treatment Available
Surgery is the first treatment that the majority of patients go through. The malignant tumor masses are easily removed during surgery. A rather dangerous treatment, chemotherapy, sends drugs throughout the body to further reach the cancer areas. Another treatment is using radiation; x-rays in high form. Radiation kills the mesothelioma cells.

Chemotherapy is given as a pill to injected into a vein. It can also be injected into the muscle. Chemotherapy is primarily used to target the local area of the tumor. During treatment, patients experience extreme side effects: vomiting, hair loss, nausea, exhaustion, and anorexia. Side effects are harbored specifically with treatments.

Chemotherapy can use a one-pill treatment that has success. Patients have better experiences with this type, also referred to single-agent therapy. Specific agents used are as follows: doxorubicin, carboplatin, mitomucin, cyclophosphamide, Ifosdomide and cisplatin. The response rate to these drugs range depending upon the drug.

A list of the rates follows below along with the related drug:
- 15% response- doxorubicin, detrorubucin, pirarubicin, and epirubicin.
- 10%-20%- carboplatin, mitomucin, cyclophosphamide, Ifosdomide and cisplatin.
- 14% — listed again is cisplatin.
- 36%– cisplatin, a rare case that lasted two to eight months.

The response rates are proven to be extremely low when using single-agent chemotherapy. Scientists are driven to study a number of treatment combinations for mesothelioma cancer patients. They have increased the response rates up to 44%, but still lack effectiveness. The combination treatments for mesothelioma cancer are not being used often enough for dramatic changes, slimming the effects on patients to single-agent therapy. A newer combination showing a 47% response rate uses a more recent agent called gemcitabine. The agent is used in combination with cisplatin. This research was performed in Australia by Australian researchers and has proven survival results with Stage III and IV mesothelioma patients. The research ran for 25 weeks and given a chance for survival at 41%.

Given all the regimes for treating mesothelioma patients, new research brings more treatments and the tools needed to perform. Doctors are getting many more patients and better at predicting the appropriate regime for specific patients. Patients are diagnosed based on their age and the cancer stage of mesothelioma they are in.

Since research is ongoing; the chances of finding a cure for mesothelioma cancer is likely. The treatments now available still have proven survival rates for mesothelioma cancer. Although the patients must go through extreme treatments, putting their bodies through torture, many are still lucky to survive.
